“Hope these old parachutes open… jump!”
It has always felt as though TV and movies were preparing me for a situation in which I might unexpectedly have to jump from an airplane. Fortunately, I have avoided this scenario so far.
Of course, one does not necessarily need to believe in the accuracy of parachuting scenes from the movies:

Speaking of movie unreality, I gamed with a guy who’s job was to pack parachutes which I thought was weird because all the war movies taught me that you always back your own chute

That’s interesting. I didn’t know that. I wonder if that’s a situation where the rules changed within the military and the movies never caught up.
